Our Mission

To Implement policies and action programmers involving multiple dimensions of human living and human poverty; pursue a life- cycle approach to human progress, catering to the appropriate needs at all stages of life. The policy planning and action programming centre on human being and focus on socio-economic development and environmental protection. The support and services provided relate to education, workforce development, health and nutrition, infrastructure, inclusive and appropriate financing for planned economic activities, social issues and social capital, response to climate change impacts, gender issues, cultural dimensions, sports and social advocacy etc.   

Our vision

Bangladesh where poverty has been eradiated; the ruling development and governance paradigm is inclusive, people- centered, equitable and sustainable; and all citizens live healthy, appropriately educated and empowered and humanly dignified life. 

Location / Area of Operation

SHEPHERDS provides services to 10 Upazila 85 backward union in Barisal District as well as slums of Barisal city in Bangladesh. 


To eradicate illiteracy. 

To reduce poverty by improving economic status of individuals through income generation activates. 

To improve health status of communities through health education, environmental cleanliness and increasing access to primary health and 

child care centers in remote villages. 

To organize women into self help groups and develop their leadership qualities to facilitate making decisions at personal and social levels. 

To inculcate the habit of thrift (saving) and credit among target groups. 

To eliminate bonded, forced, child labor and slavery. 

To promote gender equality.

Major Activities

Health care activities in rural villages include free health camps and awareness programs. 

Vocational training : Programs are organized for unemployed women to build their skills and make them profitable. 

Training programs for groups of 10 women include tailoring, knitting, embroidery, handloom weaving and making leather products. 

Night schools for illiterate women : Female literacy in Barisal district is low. To address this night schools operate to teach basic and functional literacy. 

Operating pre-school’s for children where there are no government run pre-primary schools (Kawnia). 

Women’s development program: Organizing women into self-help groups, promotion of savings and credit activities, and small businesses development through microfinance. 

Target Population 

Target communities served by Shepherds Bangladesh are from the lowest strata of society. The NGO works fro upliftment of people limited by a low status in society in the areas of social, economic, domestic, personal and cultural development. The total number of people directly and indirectly benefiting from the services form Shepherds Bangladesh NGO is approximately 15,000 in 1999.

What We Think 

Self- help Program is a self-guided improvement[1] economically, intellectually, or emotionally- Often with a substantial psychological basis. Many different self-help group programs exist, each with its own focus, techniques, associated beliefs, proponents and it some cases, leaders. Concepts and terms originating in self- help culture and Twelve- step culture, such as recovery, dysfunctional families, and codependency have become firmly integrated in mainstream language. [2]

Self-help often utilizes publicly available information or support groups, on the internet as well as in person, where people in similar situations join together. [1]  Form early examples in self-driven legal practice [3] and home-spun advice, the connotations of the word have spread and often apply particularly to education, business, psychology and psychotherapy, commonly distributed through the popular genre of self-help books. 

According to the APA Dictionary of Psychology, potential benefits of self-help groups that professionals may not be able to provide include friendship, emotional support, experiential knowledge, identity, meaningful roles, and a sense of belonging. 

Group associated with health conditions may consist of patients and caregivers. 

As well as featuring long-time members sharing experiences, these health groups can become support groups can become support groups and clearing-houses fro educational material. Those who help themselves by learning and identifying about health problems can be said to exemplify self-help, while self-help gropus cna be seen more as peer-to-peer support.
